How to Size Hanfu for Western Bodies: The Complete Guide

How to Size Hanfu for Western Bodies: The Complete Guide

June 13, 2026 ·

Hanfu sizing follows Chinese garment conventions — measurements in centimeters, a relaxed fit designed for drape rather than structure, and adjustable waistbands on skirt styles. Most Western women size up one size from their usual Western size. The three measurements you need: bust (fullest point, in cm), waist (natural waist, in cm), and height (barefoot, in cm). When between sizes, always choose the larger — hanfu can be taken in by a tailor but cannot be let out.

Why Hanfu Sizing Feels Different

Hanfu sizing is not difficult. It is simply different — and understanding why it's different makes the process straightforward.

Western sizing is designed around a fitted silhouette. The measurements assume the garment will follow the body's contours closely. Hanfu is designed around a draped silhouette — the garment is meant to flow around the body, not conform to it. This means hanfu measurements are generally more generous through the body, and the fit is more forgiving than Western sizing suggests.

The second difference is measurement convention. Chinese sizing uses centimeters exclusively. A Western woman who wears a US size 8 or UK size 12 needs to know her measurements in centimeters to buy hanfu correctly — the size number itself is meaningless across systems.

The third difference is proportional assumptions. Chinese sizing charts are built around Chinese body proportions — typically narrower shoulders and shorter torsos than Western averages. Olive Girl adjusts for Western proportions in our sizing, but understanding this context helps you make better decisions when between sizes.

Step 1: Take Your Measurements

You need a soft measuring tape, two minutes, and a mirror. Measure in centimeters — do not convert from inches, as rounding errors compound. If you don't have a measuring tape, a piece of string and a ruler work perfectly.

B

Bust — 胸围 (xiōng wéi)

Wrap the tape around the fullest point of your chest — usually across the nipple line. Keep the tape parallel to the floor. Breathe normally — do not hold your breath or pull the tape tight. The tape should be snug but not compressing.

→ Common mistake: measuring too high (across the collarbone) or too low (below the bust). The fullest point is correct.
W

Waist — 腰围 (yāo wéi)

Measure around your natural waist — the narrowest point of your torso, usually 2–3cm above your navel. Bend sideways: the crease that forms is your natural waist. Keep the tape snug but not tight — you should be able to slip one finger underneath.

→ Common mistake: measuring at the hip bone rather than the natural waist. The natural waist is higher and narrower.
H

Hip — 臀围 (tún wéi)

Measure around the fullest point of your hips and seat — usually 18–23cm below your natural waist. Keep the tape parallel to the floor. This measurement is most important for ma mian skirts and fitted styles.

→ Common mistake: measuring too high (at the hip bone) rather than at the fullest point of the seat.

Height — 身高 (shēn gāo)

Measure barefoot, standing straight against a wall. Look straight ahead — do not tilt your head up or down. Have someone else mark the wall at the top of your head, then measure from the floor to the mark. Height determines dress length selection.

→ Height is used to select between standard and tall lengths. Most Olive Girl styles are designed for 158–170cm. Contact us for custom lengths.

Step 2: Read the Size Chart

This is Olive Girl's general size guide for Western women. Individual product pages include specific measurements for each style — always check the product page chart first, and use this guide as a reference framework.

Size Bust (cm) Waist (cm) Hip (cm) US Size (approx) UK Size (approx)
S 84–88 66–70 90–94 4–6 8–10
M 88–92 70–74 94–98 6–8 10–12
L 92–96 74–78 98–102 8–10 12–14
XL 96–100 78–82 102–106 10–12 14–16
2XL 100–106 82–88 106–112 12–14 16–18
3XL 106–112 88–94 112–118 14–16 18–20
US/UK size equivalents are approximate — always use your centimeter measurements as the primary reference. When between sizes, choose the larger.

Step 3: Style-Specific Sizing Notes

Ma Mian Skirt

Horse-Face Skirt Sizing

Primary measurement: waist (the waistband ties give 4–6cm flexibility)
Secondary measurement: hip (for the pleated side panels)
If between sizes: choose larger — the tie waistband adjusts down easily
Length: floor-length styles designed for 158–168cm; midi for 160–172cm
Western note: the front panel sits at the natural waist — measure there
Tang Dynasty Hanfu Set

Full Set Sizing

Primary measurement: bust (the outer robe is the critical fit point)
The inner layer (ruqun) is adjustable with ties — more forgiving
Shoulder width: Western women often need to size up for shoulder fit
Sleeve length: large sleeve sets are designed to extend past the wrist
Western note: if broad-shouldered, prioritize shoulder fit over bust
Chiffon Fairy Set

Flowing Dress Sizing

Most forgiving style — the flowing silhouette accommodates a wide range
Primary measurement: bust (the fitted inner layer is the critical point)
The outer chiffon layer is fully flowing — no fit concerns
If between sizes: either size usually works — choose based on bust
Western note: the most size-inclusive hanfu style available
Embroidered Top + Skirt Set

Two-Piece Set Sizing

Size the top by bust; size the skirt by waist/hip independently if needed
Two-piece sets allow mixing sizes — common for Western proportions
Contact us to order top and skirt in different sizes
The embroidered top is the more fitted piece — prioritize bust fit
Western note: ordering different sizes for top and bottom is normal

Sizing for Different Western Body Types

Broad Shoulders

Size up based on shoulder width rather than bust measurement. The outer robe's shoulder seam is the hardest point to alter. Best styles: flowing chiffon sets and ma mian skirts — both have minimal shoulder structure.

Tall (170cm+)

Floor-length styles will be midi-length; midi styles will be knee-length. Contact us before ordering for custom length options. Best styles: Tang Dynasty large sleeve sets — the dramatic sleeves draw attention upward and the length reads as intentional.

Petite (under 158cm)

Floor-length styles will pool slightly — this can be beautiful or can be hemmed by a tailor. Midi styles will be closer to floor-length. Best styles: ma mian skirts — the structured front panel elongates the silhouette and the length is easily adjusted.

Full Bust (D+ cup)

Size by bust measurement and have the waist taken in by a tailor if needed. The flowing silhouette of most hanfu styles is naturally accommodating. Best styles: flowing chiffon sets — the outer layer is fully unstructured and the most size-inclusive option.

Long Torso

The high waistline of Tang Dynasty styles may sit lower than intended on a long torso. Ma mian skirts with a natural waistband are more accommodating. Best styles: ma mian skirts and two-piece sets — the waistband position is adjustable.

Plus Size (2XL+)

Hanfu's flowing silhouette is naturally inclusive — the drape is more flattering than fitted Western garments at larger sizes. Best styles: flowing chiffon sets and ma mian skirts. Contact us for 3XL and custom sizing options.

The Tailor Rule: What Can and Cannot Be Altered

Alteration Guide

What a local tailor can fix — and what they can't

A good local tailor can make hanfu fit perfectly. The key is knowing which alterations are straightforward and which are not — so you can make the right sizing decision before you order.

✦ Taking in the waist: straightforward — 30 minutes, low cost
✦ Hemming the length: straightforward — 20 minutes, low cost
✦ Taking in the side seams: straightforward — 45 minutes, moderate cost
✦ Shortening sleeves: possible — 30 minutes, moderate cost
✦ Letting out seams: only possible if there is seam allowance — check before ordering
✦ Altering embroidered areas: not recommended — embroidery cannot be moved
✦ Widening shoulders: very difficult — requires deconstructing the shoulder seam

The rule: size up when in doubt. Taking in is always easier than letting out. The flowing silhouette of hanfu means a slightly larger size still looks beautiful — a slightly smaller size is uncomfortable and may stress the embroidery seams.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does hanfu sizing compare to Western sizing?

Hanfu sizing uses centimeters, has a relaxed fit designed for drape rather than structure, and uses adjustable tie waistbands on skirt styles. Most Western women size up one size from their usual Western size. Always use your centimeter measurements — the size number itself is meaningless across systems.

What measurements do I need to buy hanfu?

Bust (fullest point, in cm), waist (natural waist, in cm), and height (barefoot, in cm). Hip measurement is useful for ma mian skirts and fitted styles. Always measure in centimeters.

Do hanfu dresses fit Western body proportions?

Yes, with some considerations. Hanfu's flowing silhouette accommodates a wide range of body proportions. Western women typically have broader shoulders and longer torsos — size up for shoulder fit when needed. Olive Girl adjusts for Western proportions in our sizing.

Should I size up when buying hanfu?

Generally yes. If between sizes, always choose the larger size. Hanfu can be taken in by a tailor but cannot be let out. The waistband on ma mian skirts is adjustable with ties, giving 4–6cm of flexibility.

What if my measurements fall between hanfu sizes?

Always choose the larger size. Hanfu can be taken in by a tailor but cannot be let out. A dress that is slightly large will still look beautiful; a dress that is slightly small will be uncomfortable and may stress the embroidery seams.

How do I measure myself for hanfu at home?

Use a soft measuring tape. Bust: around the fullest point of your chest, tape parallel to the floor. Waist: around your natural waist (narrowest point, 2–3cm above navel), snug but not tight. Height: barefoot, standing straight. Convert all measurements to centimeters.
